After competing in professional speech competitions and winning 1st place in the CUNY (City University of New York) speech contest, Tenzing Sherpa has curated a unique and engaging experience for individuals looking to learn the fundamentals of effective public speaking. This workshop is designed to provide a high-level overview of speech structure, tonality, and personal styles.

WELLNESS & SOCIAL CHANGE: An lgbt case study
This workshop is structured in two parts: The first is a consideration of the habits of human rights and other modern social change projects. Using the LGBT rights movement as our paradigm, we will consider why this change project has failed and won in particular ways and places, and what hidden costs and triumphs have accompanied these outcomes. The workshop will conclude with a personal story by the presenter.

TENZIN MINGYUR PALDRON
University of California, Berkeley Mingyur is a filmmaker and PhD candidate in Rhetoric at the University of California, Berkeley. Born in India and raised in the United States, he is the author of Nïngtam (སྙིང་གཏམ་), a goodwill initiative that encourages respectful dialogue and learning on the subject of gender expression and sexuality as relevant to Tibetans. During his studies at Berkeley, Mingyur has been honored by such awards as the Dolores Zohrab Liebmann Fellowship, the Magistretti Fellowship in Asian Languages, Cultures, History, and Society, and the Eugene Cota-Robles Fellowship. He lives in Olympia, Washington where he is writing on the limits of ethics and understanding, and questions of speech, silence, and social change. |
Let's do stem!
How do scientists do what they do? A hands-on activity will demonstrate the scientific process and will include a rocket-building contest. Participants will be part of an interactive discussion about STEM careers.

This workshop will talk about how to prepare for and pursue a career in law. The workshop will also talk about the role – and limitations -- of domestic and international law in support of human rights.

DENNIS CUSACK
Attorney Dennis is an attorney and partner in the law firm of Farella Braun + Martel, based in San Francisco CA. Over a thirty year legal career, Dennis Cusack has practiced in the area of insurance law, including general liability, aviation, cyber liability, intellectual property and employment practices. He emphasizes strategic approaches through alternative dispute resolution mechanisms, including mediation and specially-designed arbitrations. He was recognized in The Best Lawyers in America list in insurance law and was the recipient of the 2017 Client Choice Award in the Insurance category for California from International Law Office (ILO) and Lexology. Dennis Cusack also externed for the Honorable Stanley A. Weigel, U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. He has written and lectured in California and nationally on insurance law issues. Dennis has been a longtime supporter of Tibetans and Tibet — both in the Bay Area and nationally — and has served in a pro bono capacity across a broad range of legal and justice issues. He is currently affiliated with the American Bar Association’s Litigation, Insurance Coverage and International Law sections and the BASF Insurance Coverage and International Human Rights Law sections. |
machik: incubating social innovation in tibet

In this workshop we will explain Machik’s various programs and areas of focus. Participants will have an opportunity to find out about Machik’s efforts and initiatives over the past 19 years, and hear the current status of programs. The workshop will offer ideas about how to get involved in Machik’s work.

CRIMINAL JUSTICE REFORM: SAFER COMMUNITIES AND ADDRESSING HARM
There are 10 million people in prison and jail around world, and 1 out of 4 people incarcerated are in the United States. The participatory workshop will talk about strategies to build safer and stronger communities through criminal justice reform, and make links to a variety of social justice and social innovation efforts.

JASON ZIEDENBERG Justice Policy Institute Jason is the Director of Policy and Research at Justice Policy Institute, and organization dedicated to ending society's reliance on incarceration. Jason has also held staff positions with two justice systems, the Washington, D.C. juvenile department, and the adult probation and parole agency covering Portland, Oregon. He has worked on research and policy projects with the National Center for Victims of Crime, the U.S. Justice Department, the Southern Poverty Law Center, the Washington Lawyers Committee on Civil Rights and Urban Affairs, and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). He has a Masters in Journalism from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism in New York, and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Toronto from his hometown, Toronto, Canada. |

TASHI B. DHONDUP
MLB Advanced Media Tashi is a content producer at MLB Advanced Media in New York. Born and raised in Boise, Idaho, he holds a BA from Dartmouth College in film studies and sociology. Tashi Dhondup also has an MBA from the University of Oregon in Eugene, OR. He has been an active participant in the Tibetans of Mixed Heritage activities since the inaugural conference in 2014. |

DECHEN KELDEN
Outreach Coordinator, Tibetans of Mixed Heritage Dechen is a graduate of Sarah Lawrence College where she focused her studies in Social Psychology and Public Relations. She is of Kalmyk Mongolian and Tibetan descent and was born and raised in central New Jersey, located in the heart of the Kalmyk community. She is a co-founder of the Kalmyk Youth Coalition, an organization dedicated to empowering young people within the Kalmyk diaspora through leadership development, historical understanding and the preservation of Kalmyk language and culture. Earlier this year Dechen's blogpost debuted a new series highlighting narratives of Tibetan identity for the Tibetans of Mixed Heritage project. She recently joined the Tibetans of Mixed Heritage organizing team, coordinating outreach for their first conference in India in October 2017. |

Kunsang was born in New York City to a Tibetan father and a Kalmyk-Mongolian mother, and raised in Jackson, New Jersey. She studied art and social change at Hampshire College, concentrating in theatre and creative writing. Kunsang has been part of a core team behind the Tibetans of Mixed Heritage Project. Kunsang is also a co-founder of the Kalmyk Youth Coalition and continues to develop programs focused on empowering Kalmyk, Mongolian and Tibetan youth. She recently completed her Masters in Performance and Culture at Goldsmiths College, University of London, where she studied under renowned theatre Professor Maria Shevtsova. Her dissertation, Social Spaces and Theatres of Exclusion Within Contemporary Tibetan Art, examined case studies of physical and social spaces created by Tibetan musicians and artists in Tibet and in diaspora, focusing on performances of identity and the use of space.
